Donata does the Christmas Tree Farm

Posted in Christmas, Guide Dogs for the Blind tagged , , at 5:36 pm by smilinshell11

So this post is about 2 weeks late but better late than never right? 🙂 This year we decided to take Donata with us to get a Christmas Tree. This year we went to a different farm than last year which was fun, but they didn’t have the wide variety like the one did last year. If you remember, last year we took Simmons with us.  Since neither Mr. Charming or I have a car conducive to hauling Christmas trees around, we borrowed the truck from my work. I think Donata loved being able to look out the side mirror.

Aren’t I beautiful?

Once we got there, we were able to find a tree just for Donata.
P1040178

After that, we were on a mission to find our perfect tree.  Here she is in front of it.
P1040181

When we got home, it was time to make some hot chocolate and decorate the tree.

Here she is in front of the decorated tree and fireplace.

I did take a few picture of her with her jacket on but she gets stubborn when her jacket goes on and won’t look at the camera so they really didn’t turn out. 😦 I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

Not Yet

Posted in Guide Dogs for the Blind tagged , at 9:16 am by smilinshell11

I got the word last night that Topeka and Donata will NOT be heading back in December.  There had been a possibility that both would head back then but we still have one more month with them!  That would have been 1/2 of our club. 😦  How many dogs does your club have?

Cold & Wet

Posted in Guide Dogs for the Blind tagged , , , at 7:07 pm by smilinshell11

Last Saturday (as in the 7th of November) was our city’s annual Veterans Day Parade.  This year we decided to march in it instead of watching.  I probably wouldn’t have minded as much but it was COLD, WET, and WINDY (Yes, those need to be in caps).  🙂 Even after a hot shower, I was chilled to the bone for standing outside for about 3 hours which 2 hours of that were just standing waiting for our turn to go.   The dogs did awesome and there were no accidents while marching in the parade.  Here are pictures of some very WET dogs.  First up is Topeka:

In this picture, Donata had a leaf in her mouth but the funny part was she had no idea it was there. She has really filled-out lately.

Next up is Marlin looking all patriotic:

After the parade, we went over to a club member’s house for some food and warm drinks. Here is a picture of Topeka on the left and Donata on the right, taking a nap.

And of course, Marlin:

Next weekend we have Topeka so you will probably be seeing an update about her soon.

California Fun Days ’09

Posted in Guide Dogs for the Blind tagged , , , , , at 9:42 pm by smilinshell11

It was my first time down at the California Campus and I’ve decided I’m moving down there. 🙂 Okay, not really but I loved it down there. I was able to meet Taelor and Pilaf and Elizabeth and Peyton! It’s always wonderful to meet the people (and the dogs) that you have read so much about. I also picked up a tee-shirt from Cabana’s club. I was amazed at how many people were there and how many more puppies were passed out than at the Oregon Fun Days. Here are a bunch of pictures I took. Let’s start at the entrance:

Looking to your left once entering.

Vender Booths which were actually in the back right hand corner of the campus.

Time to enter the place where all the fun happens!

First stop is the newly rennovated kennels.

Their outside playground.

This dog LOVED having his picture taken.

Then we move on to grooming and food prep.

P1030704

Next up we have the Vet’s Office. They have nice reception area and a couple of exam rooms though the most interesting part is where they do the operations.

P1030706

At the back is where the whelping kennel is at. We weren’t allowed to go in there, but they did have a live feed of some LITTLE puppies. They are kind of hard to see because they are yellow, but so small and cute.

P1030696

Next up, we have some 8 week old puppies out playing and hanging out in their kennels.

At this point I almost took a puppy home 🙂

Once outside, we talked to one of the head trainers where we saw the back of one of the training vans they would take down town. It’s fully equipped with air conditioning so while the dogs are waiting for their turn, they don’t get hot.

P1030714

Finally was the littermate meetings!  I was able to meet ALL of Topekas’ siblings. Too bad Topeka wasn’t there or it would have been a total sibling reunion. I have no idea what order they are in but we have Tallulah, Tara, Toledo, Trevor, Trishna, Tropic, and Tulsa.

P1030721

I found it kind of interesting that almost all her siblings were in haltis. Also, a little hint for next year and littermate pictures.  Try and line them up fron left to right by name order. That way when going back through pictures, you know who is who!

Next up we have a couple of more Donatas’ siblings. There is Dexter in Blue (M), Dot in Yellow (F), and Dubai in Pink (F).

IMG_1702

I also got to meet Donata’s mom, Petal. She’s a beautiful Golden.

P1030726

As you can see, we had a wonderful time and can’t wait to go next year! 🙂

Oregon Fun Days ’09

Posted in Guide Dogs for the Blind tagged , , , , , at 9:31 pm by smilinshell11

There is a reason they call it Fun Days!  I was able to meet Anna and Avani which was super fun! I had a few people ask me what the Oregon Campus looks like because they have never been so I tried to get some picture this year.  It’s apparently a smaller campus, but more spread out than California so it feels bigger. First off we have the famous wall.

Inside the kennels:

The area they bathe the dogs. Don’t mind the cat (I think his name is Chester) 🙂

I was also happy to see Loyola’s name up on the board.  I am not sure why  they have her as a male though.  I miss that girl.

Here are two other pictures from the day. Here is Donata on the left sporting her lei and Topeka on the right. P1030525

Finally we have some of Donatas’ sisters! From L to R: Damara, Dotty, Donata Sisters

And just for Poppy, your brothers Pacifico on the left and Pronto on the right.PP

Ohhh and Mr. Charming and I made it on the Oregon Campus Fun Day pictures with Donata. We are pretty much famous now. 🙂

The Vet & Vegas

Posted in Guide Dogs for the Blind, Travel tagged , , , , , at 9:28 pm by smilinshell11

Donata left Tuesday evening.  It was kind of weird not having her at work with me on Wednesday.  On Monday, I had to meet our leader at the Vet.  Donata had “taken a turn for the worse” early Sunday morning.  Poor Puppy. 😦 She was up every 2-3 hours starting at 2:30 am.  I had put about 10  pieces of kibble in with her cottage cheese and rice and apparently her system wasn’t ready for it.  We didn’t feed her Sunday morning though Sunday evening, we did 1/2 of the normal cottage cheese and rice as not to starve her and prayed she would make it through the night (which she did).

I want to know why all vet’s smell the same? 🙂 I don’t remember the last time I went to one, but they all have a distinct smell.  Our leader met us there (since it was her dog) and the vet did a full exam.  I was so happy to have the sheet of when she had poop/pee with me so I could give the vet when she had “done her business” and what and when she had ate.  He thought she might have a bacterial infection, but couldn’t confirm it without a poop sample (which after pooping that much, well good luck getting a sample). 🙂  He put her on some medicine and Monday evening, she seemed to be doing better.  He said to keep her on the cottage cheese and rice diet till everything looked good again.

I emailed our leader on Wednesday and she seemed to be doing much better.  It’s no fun having a sick puppy.  You want to make them feel better, but there isn’t much you can do.  I’m just thankful it wasn’t anything worse.

Oh and while I’m thinking of it, we are FOR SURE going to the California Puppy Fun Days!  We booked our tickets this week and are super excited.

This Wednesday we leave for Las Vegas for the 4th of July weekend.  I’m SUPER excited because we are going to see Michael Buble in concert!! (Screams like a girl at a ‘N Sync Concert) 🙂  For those of you who don’t know who he is, here are two of his songs (Everything) :
and Home (thanks to YouTube):

I hope you all have a wonderful 4th of July.  I’ll post an update when we get back!

Puppy Update

Posted in Guide Dogs for the Blind, Uncategorized tagged , , , at 8:20 pm by smilinshell11

To start things off, Loyola is in Phase 4 as of a week ago.  I was talking with her raisers at the last meeting and if she is career changed, they would take her back!  I know she has a great shot of making it, but you never know what will happen in the next 6 phases.

Simmons is heading back this week. 😦 We said our good bye’s at our meeting last week.

These past two weekends we have been busy puppy-sitting.  The first weekend we had Donata (5-1/2 months old) who is 1/2 Golden Retriever, 1/2 Black Lab.  She likes to jump up on people so we worked with her on that.  I had her at work with me Friday and Monday and she was perfect.  She slept both days and never made a sound.  She totally has the puppy look going for and is just a very sweet dog.  Here are some pictures:

As you can see, she made herself pretty comfortable at work:

I love these last two pictures as she is totally doing her puppy look:

This past weekend we had Topeka who is almost 7 months old.  (It seems like yesterday she was just coming off the truck!)  She has sure grown up since the last time we had her! She still loves to give kisses (licking) but overall has really matured and is a great loose leash dog. Here are some pictures of her:

Topeka in her jacket:

I was on my computer and I look down to find her sleeping like this:

Next time we have Topeka will be the end of the month. If I’m feeling motivated, I might be posting some unrelated Guide Dog posts. We will see how that goes. 🙂 If you have any great suggestions for topics, I would love to hear them.  Also, please let me know if you want to be added to my blog roll.

Get Ready

Posted in Guide Dogs for the Blind, Mr. Charming tagged , , , , , , at 12:21 pm by smilinshell11

We are going to be doing a bunch (well a bunch for Mr. Charming and I) puppy sitting starting this Thursday. We will have Donata this weekend, Topeka the next weekend, and then Topeka again at the end of May.  Loyola is down in Oregon moving right along through her phases, Simmons heads back in about 2 weeks, and Lomita in June.  Malta (who is being raised by Loyola’s family) is a little fireball.  Mr. Charming had her at the last business meeting and she didn’t calm down for him (or anyone) for that matter for 2+ hours!  She was making me tired just looking at her!

With that, check back soon.  🙂

Puppy Van (Not the Truck) :)

Posted in Guide Dogs for the Blind tagged , , , at 5:52 pm by smilinshell11

Usually I am unable to make it to the puppy truck because it falls on a Friday (which is when I work).  Today it happened to be on a Saturday so I was able to make it.  It happened to be the van that brought the puppies up, not the truck so I guess I’ll just have to go to another one!  I figured after a year of working with Guide Dogs, you have to see at least once truck right?  Here are the puppies that arrived on the truck today (or at least the ones I can remember) though I probably butchered the spellings.

Siblings
Neutron-Can’t remember if Black or Yellow Lab
Nuance-Yellow (Female I think?) Lab
Nelly-YFL

Siblings:
Donata (She is in our club and our leader’s new puppy)-BF
Dotty-BF
Dierica-BF
(This group was born November 4th.  They are 1/2 golden, 1/2 lab.  Their mother is Petal who was raised by our leader and their dad is a black lab)

Siblings:
Tricia (YFL)
Tabasco-Didn’t see this one come off

And most importantly, some pictures!
Colby was spayed the other day so she has on a pretty collar. She was career changed yesterday so she was headed back to be placed by Guide Dogs.

This is the new puppy to our club Donata. She was SO soft and cute.

This picture almost makes me cry…It’s like the Guide Dog Circle of Life. 🙂 The guy who is petting the bigger dog (who was going back), got the puppy that is also in the picture.
