Construction, Robots, & Topeka

The middle of September we decided it was time to redo the floors.   Mr. Charming and I are not DIY people and our house has a lot of weird angles so we left the installation up to the professionals.  We put in wood called Duraplank throughout the bottom floor and Duraceramic tile in all the bathrooms and laundry room.  We didn’t replace the carpet upstairs or on the stairs because it really isn’t worn that much.  Needless to say, we love it!  The wood is a composite so the dogs can run every where and won’t scratch it. The tile is also warmer to walk on which is the biggest plus for me.   Here are a couple of pictures of the final product.

Of course, when doing something on the house, there is always to be more to it than not. In this case, we ended up re-doing the tile around the fireplace in the living room (we have two fireplaces which I don’t know why, but we do!)  We actually saved a lot of money by paying the installers direct instead of through the place where we bought the materials. There is my little frugal tip for you! We had planned on doing the floors but the Friday before the install was to begin, we ended up getting our roof replaced (no, that was not planned). We had a leak in our bathroom that kept getting worse even after Mr. Charming had tried to fix it numerous times. Our house is at the point where we probably would have had to replace it in the next couple of years so we just bit the bullet and did it. Now that all the construction work is done, it feels like a brand new house!

I also got a robot named Eva (like how Wall-E says it!) She does an amazing job especially on the new floors.  She’s a little quirky, but I still love her. 🙂

After all of this, we got Topeka for a weekend while her raising family went to Hawaii.  I think she didn’t know what she was missing out on.  Here are a couple of pictures of her (she turned 1 year not too long ago).  The first one is at work:

I don’t understand how that can be comfortable.

Topeka in her jacket.

Topeka will be the next puppy heading back from our club. 😦

Outside Christmas Lights

Dear Neighbors,

I honestly did a double take.  I’m no Martha Stewart of outside light decorating but wow.  I really do feel bad taking a picture and posting it on the Internet.  I’m a little confused how you came to the conclusion that 5 different strands of lights would look good.  I don’t mean to sound rude, but I think it would look better with no lights than what you currently have hanging.

The Results Are In

Posted in House tagged , , , , at 10:11 pm by smilinshell11

I took the “Dyson Challenge”.  I first vacuumed the front room with my old vacuum and then went over the same area with my new Dyson.  It is not a big area as I was feeling lazy and didn’t feel like vacuuming twice!  Here are the contenders:

On the right, we have my old Bissell vacuum. On the left, we have the challenger: A Dyson DC18 Slim.

Without further ado, here are the results: P1020845

The left is what I vacuumed up with my old Bissell. The right is the additional “stuff” the Dyson picked up. It doesn’t seem like that much but the area I was vacuuming wasn’t that big.

Needless to say, I have vacuumed the whole house (some parts twice). 🙂 If you are to ever get a Dyson, I would recommend one with the ball.  It works really well on the stairs with the attachment and the cord is apparently short for a Dyson, but longer than my Bissell. It is very easy to maneuver and carry up the stairs without killing yourself.

I love my Dyson DC18 Slim and the Dyson Airblade that I was able to use the other day in a restroom.  Mr. Dyson, you have made me a believer.

To the one person who voted it would ship early, you were right! 🙂 My Dyson arrived this afternoon and I think I’m in love.  In its blog debut, my new Dyson DC18 Slim:

Tomorrow I will post the results of my “Dyson Challenge”.  In other words, I will vacuum with my old vacuum and then vacuum with the Dyson to see how much extra stuff it picks up.  Happy early Christmas to me! 🙂

Want Versus Need

Posted in House, Money, Mr. Charming, Poll tagged , , , , , at 3:44 pm by smilinshell11

I’m having that major dilemma right now.  I feel like I need this: Dyson DC18 Slim Vacuum  Now you might think, “$250 for a VACUUM!!!” but anyone who has ever had one tells me that it the BEST vacuum they have ever owned.  My current vacuum is something like this: Bissell Upright Bagless  Granted I could sell my old vacuum on Craigslist and get something for it.  The Dyson I want is 1/2 off plus if I order before midnight, Mr. Charming found a code for free shipping.  Right now we have mostly carpet throughout the house but plan on soon putting in some sort of wood flooring and in that case, do I really need a nice vacuum? We don’t have a dog that lives with us (though we might puppy-sit once a month for a weekend) or really bad allergies.

To buy or not to buy, that is the question.
