Jury Duty

Posted in Court, Jury Duty at 9:13 pm by smilinshell11

A couple of weeks ago I got a notice in the mail saying I had been summoned for jury duty. I have only been summoned one other time and I was in college and was able to get out of it because it was the week of finals. This time I had no reason not to go and thought it would be interesting.

It started Monday morning having to be there . Maybe I should mention that it has snowed Sunday night and I live on a hill. Not a great combo considering I HATE driving in the snow/ice. I made it there safely and got parked. After sitting around all morning, I was called to a jury panel right before lunch. It was me and 69other people, with me being lucky juror #16. We were brought into the court room where the judge tells us what the guy has been charged with and how long the trial is expected to go. She then asks if anyone has a hardship that would prevent them from being on the case (such as a scheduled surgery, primary income, travel plans). From this about 20 people are excused with cause. Then she reads off the list of people testifying to see if anyone knows someone from that list.

Here is where it gets interesting. When I walked in, I was seated in the first row behind the defendant and his lawyer. Before I even knew anything about the charges the guy just kind of gave me the creeps. The charges are read and kind of like I thought: One account of 1st degree child rape and three accounts of 1st degree child molestation with the trial lasting 2-1/2 to 3 weeks. Now I don’t have any children and I was one of the younger people there, so my first thought was they know I don’t have any children so I would probably be more impartial than someone with. After all of that the prosecuting attorney gets up and starts asking the jurors questions (this goes back/forth between the two lawyers) for 2 hours (1/2 hour each). Thankfully 1/2 of it was on Monday and the other half was Tuesday morning.

They ask some questions that were like huh? Like what is the difference between evidence and facts? How do you know the difference? How would you feel being called to the witness stand? How does a person like that react? Does that mean they are lying if they don’t make eye contact or seem nervous? You get the point…
I took the stance as not to say anything unless asked so they wouldn’t know much about me or where I stood so maybe I could get off. 🙂

After the two hours, the judge said it was time to pick a jury. Being juror #16 I knew I would get called to the box right away. Then the lawyers went back and forth saying, “Thank you Juror #(whatever)”. Then the judge says, “Juror #(whatever) you are now excused”. So they go back and forth 5 times before the defendant’s attorney says my lucky #16. I tried really hard not to smile and skip out of there happy I didn’t get put on that jury. They don’t get into the details of it but I really didn’t want to hear testimony and pictures or whatever at this point in my life about that subject.

Overall, it was a really interesting experience. I got paid a whopping $10 a day plus mileage. The best part also was I got 1-1/2 for lunch, two 15 minute breaks, and was done by 4 the first day, and 2:30 the second day. Plus if you get on a jury, no court on Friday. If it paid more, I would consider going full time. 🙂

Lots of games; video games that is

Posted in Mr. Charming, Video Game Systems, Video Games tagged , , , , , , , , , , , at 10:03 pm by smilinshell11

Last night Mr. Charming (he agreed on the name) and I beat Mario Party 8 for the Wii. He took out Bowser in the final round with a dead battery Wiimote so it was a harder fight than it should have been. 🙂 I told him he would be good at killing Bowser since he is so good at Xbox LIVE playing Halo 3. Mr. Charming has an enthusiasm (not an obsession) for video game systems. The Charming house hold has the following:
Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)
Nintendo 64 (N64)
Wii
Gameboy Advance
Sega Genesis
Xbox (Original)
Xbox 360
PlayStation 1
PlayStation 2

Plus most of the games, remotes, and accessories that come with each. The funny thing is we have no kids so most of the older consoles (except the Wii and 360) are actually out to play with. Neither of us had any of these consoles growing up so I guess we are making up for lost time.

With that, I think it’s time for me to drag him to the mall…

Cucmbers

Dear Safeway:

The past two times I have been to your store, you haven’t had cucumbers . Yes, cucumbers. I don’t know why you haven’t, but I would like you to know that I miss them and hope they come back soon. If not, I might be forced to go to *gasp* Top Foods. Granted they don’t let me earn Alaska Miles but I might be forced to in order to get my cucumbers. Either that or plant some in my garden I don’t really have.

Anyways.

Why can’t you keep in stock cucumbers? I didn’t know they were that popular. I guess I learned something new today. I please ask the next time I come into your store you have a couple of cucumbers for me to choose from.

Thank you,
The Cucumber Monster

Paper Shredder

Posted in Work tagged at 4:43 pm by smilinshell11

I HATE the shredder we have at work. Hate I know is a strong word and I don’t use it lightly but I really do HATE it. Since I have worked here it hasn’t worked properly (as in telling you when it is full) and you have to start/stop it between each thing you shred. Of course the thing will get totally full and the guys still try to shred stuff. Hello, do you not see it coming apart at the top?!?! Every time it’s ME who ends up taking it out and of course the paper goes EVERYWHERE. One of the guys always ask, “Do you need help?” No I got it. If you just would have taken it out in the first place and tried not to cram more paper in there we wouldn’t have the problem in the first place.

Irritating. I should just go and buy a new one.

Chinese Food

There is a place called The China House which has the best Chinese food ever. It is in a strip mall and one of those places you wouldn’t go to unless you knew someone else who had been there. It is one of the only Chinese places I can eat and feel okay afterwards. The family and I go there so often that when I walked in tonight to pick up some BBQ pork fried rice for small group the main gal said “Hello, welcome back. I haven’t seen you in awhile!” (in a strong Chinese accent) 🙂 I told her luckily I would also be in next Tuesday for dinner with my mom. In fact, I have about $100 worth of gift certificate there from Birthdays and Christmas.

Yeah: It’s that good.

Going Green: One Light Bulb at a Time

Posted in Going Green tagged at 10:58 pm by smilinshell11

The husband and I (I told him I would protect his innocence until I came up with a good name for him to use here) 🙂 decided to do our first step in “Going Green”. We changed our three outside lights and six flood type lamps in the kitchen to CFL’s. We will replace the other bulbs eventually when they burn out. We are hoping it will help not only with our electric bill, but help the environment.

Sometimes I wish I had a cop riding along with me to catch all the things stupid people do on the way to and from work. Is it really necessary to follow my car to the point where I can’t see your headlights on a windy road already going 5 mph over? I think not. How about those who serve in and out of traffic like they are racing the Indy 500? Seriously. I think at a certain age Grandpa and Grandma should have to go in every year and get retested. If you can’t see, you shouldn’t be driving for crying out loud. I really think some people should not be allowed to drive that is what this all comes down to. The End.
